FDMIS (Floods Detection Management Information System) is a digital flood early-warning platform maintained by Busia Municipal Council. It displays real-time river discharge data, 10-day flood forecasts, and 14-day risk calendars to help residents and authorities prepare for and respond to floods.
NORMAL (green) = River is flowing as expected. WARNING (yellow) = Elevated discharge — monitor closely and prepare. HIGH (orange) = Banks may overflow — begin evacuation of riverside areas. SEVERE (red) = Major flooding expected — full emergency response. EXTREME (dark red) = Catastrophic, rare event — maximum protection required.
Yes, if you live in a recognised flood-risk zone (particularly along River Malaba and River Lumboka), you should begin precautionary evacuation when a SEVERE forecast appears even 1–3 days ahead. Do not wait for floodwaters to arrive. Early action saves lives and property.
FDMIS shows the discharge level at the monitored river gauge point. Heavy local rain may not immediately affect river discharge — especially if rainfall is upstream in the catchment. Always observe your immediate surroundings: if water is visibly rising in drains, streets, or nearby streams, treat this as a flood warning regardless of what the gauge shows, and act accordingly.
